MANNY
About him:
Manny conjures up an entrancing
and comical vocal performance as
Manto the Magnificent, a pompous
praying-mantis magician who prays
for a return to the good old days
when audiences responded to his
act. Self-absorbed and a bit of a
hack, this faded star still thinks
he's got the magic touch and is
assisted in that illusion by his moth
mate, Gypsy.
About The Actor That Does His Voice: (Johnathan Harris)
A veteran performer himself,
Harris says, "This is probably the most difficult acting
I've ever had to do. I'm used to working with other actors. It's
a whole new thing
and one adjusts to that, as I've had to do throughout my
theatrical life. I'm a very
animated actor. Even when I'm doing a voice-over, I give a
physical performance
and absolutely all of me works. Basically, you will hear what I
have put into it
physically, emotionally, and spiritually."
He observes, "This is a script about characters that you
come to know and, I
think, love because they're all delicious in their way. It was a
joy to come to work
for John because he's so full of energy and love, which
communicates itself to
you. I found myself giggling a great deal, and that refreshes my
soul and makes it
possible for me to finish the day. I must have a good giggle.
It's part of my life.
"I adore the part of Manny," adds the actor. "He
can rise to the occasion and
pretend not to notice what is going on around him because he's
been doing it all of
his life. He's really a horse's ass, but adorable in a way. And
redeemable, which is
lovely. He loves flowery language and he believes every word he
says. He can still
remember the sound of the three people who applauded him and it
suddenly
becomes 3,000 in his mind."
A native New Yorker, Harris is best known to television audiences
as the wicked
but lovable Dr. Zachary Smith on the popular 1965 series
"Lost in Space." Over
the years he has appeared on more than 600 television shows,
ranging from
historical live programs like "Kraft Playhouse,"
"Colgate Theater," and "General
Electric Theater" to episodic series like "Zorro,"
"The Twilight Zone," "Bewitched,"
"Get Smart," "Night Gallery," "Love,
American Style," "Battlestar Galactica," and
"Fantasy Island." For film, he appeared as Big Ben in
Universal Pictures' "Problem
Child."
Harris began his acting career on the stage. After performing in
over 100 plays for
repertory companies all over the country, he made his Broadway
debut in "The
Heart of a City." Next came Broadway's "A Flag Is
Born," with Paul Muni and
Marlon Brando. He went on to play the fanatical prospector in
"The Madwoman of
Chaillot" for 454 performances and also appeared in
"The Teahouse of the August
Moon," "Hazel Flagg," Truman Capote's "The
Grass Harp," and "The Man Who
Corrupted Hadleyburg," to name a few.
His distinctive voice has made him one of the most sought, after
performers in the
voice-over and commercial fields. When he's not working on a
television or
recording project, he takes time out of his busy schedule to get
back to his
theater roots. From time to time he still tours with productions
of "The Man Who
Came to Dinner," "Damn Yankees,"
"Irene," and "The Pleasure of His Company."
Today, he remains a prominent headliner for science fiction
conventions all over
the country.
